Summary

Psych meds in the spotlight, prepare ahead. With CMS ramping up oversight on psychotropic medication use, this session will help you stay ahead. Learn to manage behaviors with non-drug interventions, support compliance, and protect resident safety—all while navigating increased survey scrutiny.

CMS issued new guidelines in 2025 indicating that they intend to increase focus on the use of psychotropic medications, and we can expect that in the coming year this will be an area of emphasized survey and enforcement activity. In addition, CMS is working on enhancing measures for public reporting purposes. Facilities and clinicians alike are faced with the dilemma that these common disturbances often have no readily available psychopharmacological treatment and not treating these conditions can have significant consequences including injury to the resident, other residents, or facility staff. The session is being provided to assist facilities in understanding the conditions commonly associated with behavioral disturbances, defining and developing non-pharmacological interventions for common behaviors, supporting compliance during annual surveys, and managing the intemperate use of antipsychotic and other unnecessary medications to support the highest quality of life for residents in these settings.
